Dooley, Orie - Deceased (2004) For 70-year old Orie Dooley, riding in the grand entry of the 28th annual Laton Lions Rodeo on Sunday is sure to bring back a lot of memories. For years, he traveled throughout the nation following the rodeo circuit with his wife and kids to compete in rodeos as a professional cowboy. Known for his years of riding bareback and full riding, the old-timer has been invited as a special guest to Sunday's grand entry beginning at 1 p.m. in the Laton Lions Rodeo Arena. Dooley experienced most of his adventures at places like El Paso and Fort Worth, Texas, Denver, Colo., Cheyenne, Wyoming and Reno, Nev. "The rodeos were good to my days, but now they're better," he said. Dooley believes that rodeoing has changed for the better and there are better opportunities for the cowboy itching to learn the art. "Now you can go to college and train for the rodeo," he said. Dooley groomed his interest in rodeos at an early age. A young boy, he practiced riding stock with his brother, Lee, whom shared the interest. By age 19, Dooley was working for the late Cuff Burrell, a rodeo stock contractor in Kings County at the time. With a big interest in riding he joined the Cowboys Turtle Association the first professional cowboy's association which later changed its name. Riding bulls and bareback horses brought many close calls for Dooley. There were the times he got stepped on by bulls, and broke his ribs more than once. He married his wife, Dorothy, in 1945 and it wasn't long before she joined him on the rodeo circuit but not to compete. It became a way of life and a means for an income for the Dooleys.
Dorothy reflects back to those times and explains how the many conveniences of today could have made life easier for her. There were no diapers, she said, bottle warmers or easy to mix infant formulas. You were lucky if you could find a laundromat, she added. "It was just a way of life. We traveled and raised the kids," she said. "We had a lot of fun." Sometimes Dooley's riding won him from $200 to a $1,000. A lot depended on the number of riders who entered the competition. "The main thing was to keep winning," he said. "After I got to winning, I never did practice, I'd just go to rodeos." "Some days we were rich, some days were poor…I wouldn't trade it for anything," he said. He retired in the early 1950s when he was in his 30s with hopes of finding a new way to earn his riches. "I could have rode for a while longer, but I wasn't getting' rich so I thought I'd try something else," said Dooley at his Laton country home not far from Highway 41.
Dooley went into partnership with his father and brother, Lee, to farm. The change of lifestyle and being away from the rodeo scene wasn't an easy move. "It took a while to get over it," he said "because you miss all your friends." Now, Dooley spends his retirement years caring for his horses on a small ranch bordering Riverdale and Laton. Many photos from days past hang on his kitchen and living room walls bearing a reminder of his life as a cowboy.
Orie and Dorothy, had sons, Orie Ray Dooley, Jr., William Douglas Dooley, Richard Dooley of Wasco, California; a daughter, Lori Dooley Mattos and seven grandchildren.

He will be remembered for his devotion to family, students, and assistance to others. He is survived by his lovely wife of 73 years, Beverly E. Coffman, Evelyn Vaughn - Deceased (2013) Evelyn was a member of the Laton Church of the Brethren, where she served as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Fellowship Hostess, and a Piano Player. She had the opportunity to travel and one her more memorable trips, was to Germany where she had the privilege of attending Oberammergau. Evelyn's life passions were her love of flowers, cats, cooking, family get-togethers and playing Rook. Her mother was an excellent cook and passed her culinary skills to her daughter. When you went to Grandma's house for dinner, you could expect some good "home cooking." She was a woman who loved the Lord. Even in her past few weeks she would comment on how blessed she was! Evelyn and her husband; Leland grew up near each other, attended the same church and Laton High School, where she played tennis and were married on November 24, 1945. After high school she attended Beauty College.

During this time, he met and married the love of his life, Bertha. Bob was a successful entrepreneur in many fields. He worked as a barber for most of his life and owned barber shops in Napa and Vallejo. He owned and operated a car dealership in Napa, was a cattle rancher in Biggs, California, became a Real Estate Broker in Solano County, and was a licensed wine carrier around the Bay Area. While in Napa, he was a member of the American Legion, started up MAGA (Mexican American Golf Asso.) in Napa and was also in the Knights of Columbus. Sagaser, Joe - Deceased (2015) - On June 25, 1955, Joe married the love of his life, Dorothy A. Genderson. They has one son, Joseph and two daughters, Kim and Lisa. Through the following years, Joe continued a long legacy of pioneers that were some of the first immigrants to North America and in the first waves of settlers to the American West. They were hard working farmers, ranchers, military, merchants and inventors. He was raised during the depression in the Central Valley of California. With his parents and six siblings, they cleared virgin land and established a family farm along the banks of the Kings River in Laton. Joe went on to graduate with honors from the University of California, Davis, with a degree in Entomology and led a distinguished career as a researcher developing and testing pest control techniques for agricultural crops. His hard work and character garnered him much respect in the agricultural community. Joe had a strong love of God and family, and instilled in them the importance of hard work, education, character and integrity. Writer C. Kelland described Joe perfectly when he wrote. "My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived and let me watch him do it." The example Joe set with his life will continue on in the following generations.
